Overview *
Hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows a doctor to look inside the uterus. It is the best way to diagnose and treat certain conditions such as: - Benign tumors. Also called fibroid tumors, these can grow in the muscular layer of the uterus and cause excessive bleeding. - Polyps inside the uterus. These are benign, but can cause abnormal bleeding. - Malignant cancer in the lining of the uterus. - Uterine septum. This happens when a tissue formation divides the uterus and can cause miscarriage. - Scar tissue. This may cause bleeding, abnormal periods and an inability to become pregnant - Adenomyosis. In this condition, the inner lining of the uterus grows inside the middle muscular layer of the uterus causing pain, cramping and abnormal bleeding.
Many of these problems can be taken care of at the time the hysteroscopy is performed. Depending on the extent of the procedure, local and/or general anesthesia is used. In addition, if a woman is using an IntraUterine Device (IUD) and the thread slips into the uterus, a hysteroscopy allows the doctors to remove the IUD.
