Back pain is a very common medical problem mostly caused by muscle spasms and degeneration of the disks in the spine. Back pain can become chronic and disabling. Muscle spasms in the back can occur from lifting objects incorrectly or after awkward bending or twisting motions. Severe cases of muscle spasm can be treated with physical therapy and medication. Long lasting back pain can follow after accidents that have caused injury to the disks, facet joints, or sacroiliac joints of the back. General wear and tear on the spine can lead to spinal degeneration which can cause severe back pain, leg pain, numbness and weakness. Spinal degeneration can be hastened in persons with arthritis. Back exercises to stretch and strengthen the back are the best way to prevent back pain. These should be done at least 2 or 3 times per week.
Good exercises for the back include: - partial sit-ups - knee-to-chest raises - press-ups
If you have had previous back problems, be sure to check with your doctor before starting a back exercise routine. Always using good 'back techniques' will also help to keep your back pain free. Adopt a straight posture when you are sitting or standing. Bend at the knees or hips, not the back.
