Overview *
|
|
A sigmoidoscopy is a simple procedure where a doctor uses a special fiber optic scope to look at the sigmoid colon. A sigmoidoscopy helps detect colon cancer, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, and other diseases of the colon. The colon is the last section of the large intestine, and the sigmoid colon is the last part of the colon. You will be given instructions of how to restrict your diet for several days before the procedure, and you will also be advised to take laxatives and a special cleaning solution to flush out the colon. The cleaner the colon is, the more successful a sigmoidoscopy is for finding abnormalities. If your doctor sees any abnormalities in your colon, they may be taken out through the scope for biopsy examination at a lab. Most patients tolerate the procedure extremely well, and do not experience any major pain or discomfort.
