Overview *
|
|
Upper GI endoscopy is a medical procedure that uses an endoscope to look inside the upper part of the gastrointestinal system (the esophagus, the stomach, and the duodenum). An endoscope is a long, thin, flexible fiberoptic tube that transmits pictures to a video screen. A number of symptoms can be investigated with this procedure such as pain in the stomach or abdomen, difficulty swallowing, bleeding, ulcers, indigestion and chest pain. Sometimes the procedure can be used to treat the problem as well, for example removal of polyps or cancerous growths, or cauterization of a bleeding ulcer. Upper GI Endoscopy is performed as an outpatient procedure. You may experience a sore throat, bloating or cramping for up to 24 hours after the procedure.
