Overview *
Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body has enough insulin, but there are not enough receptors on the cells to allow glucose to enter. This results in high levels of glucose in the blood. There is no cure for diabetes, but several treatments can control it by keeping blood sugar levels within a normal range.
Diabetes can be controlled with: - A healthy diet to promote weight control, reduce body fat, and maintain normal blood sugar levels - Exercise to lower glucose levels, keep your heart healthy, and promote healthy circulation - Insulin - Blood sugar checks to see if adjustments need to be made in your diet, exercise or medication plan
If you do not follow your diet and exercise plan and check your blood sugars, serious complications could occur: - Damage to nerves and blood vessels - Sexual dysfunction - Hardening of the arteries - Diabetic retinopathy leading to blindness - Kidney disease - High blood pressure
