Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that causes pain and numbness in the hand. The floor of the wrist tunnel is made up of bones and the roof of the wrist tunnel is made of a ligament. Thickening of this ligament is the most common factor in carpal tunnel syndrome. Arthritis can also cause carpal tunnel syndrome. Repetitive movement of the hands, such as typing, is the most common cause of carpal tunnel syndrome. Resting the hands and changing movement can alleviate this stress. Managing contributory factors, such as arthritis, diabetes, or thyroid disease can also help minimize carpel tunnel syndrome.
