Overview *
A colostomy is a surgery where part of the colon is connected to an opening in the abdomen where the stool drains out. When diseases of the intestines such as diverticulitis, cancer, Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis are treated with surgery, it sometimes results in a colostomy or ileostomy. Since patients cannot control their bowel movements after a colostomy, the opening will be fitted with a pouch to collect stool and gas. Pouches need to be changed regularly, and the skin surrounding the opening needs special care to prevent infection. You will be given guidelines to ensure you have a healthful diet and one that will not irritate your colostomy. Drinking plenty of fluids is also very important.

This patient education program explains colostomy and ileostomy. A colostomy and an ileostomy are both procedures where a surgeon connects parts of the intestines to an opening in the abdomen where stool drains out. The program covers anatomy, symptoms and causes, and the recommended surgical procedure. The program discusses the risks and complications and what to expect after the procedure.
